The digital preservation of a large-scale archival collection of historical stock exchange price lists, 1850-1940

Published on by Michael Schiltz

The project under discussion, dubbed ‘Capital Markets of the World’, concerns a large-scale microfilming and digitization effort of a collection of historical, daily stock exchanges price quotations, spanning the period 1850-1940 (the complete archival collection spans material roughly until the 1980s), and comprising a stunning 55 markets for all continents. Not only is a collection of this size and scope unique in the world; the majority of items contained herein literally cannot be found elsewhere. Since its acquisition several years ago, the collection has been embedded within the complementary areas of expertise (economic history, digital preservation) present among several researchers at the Graduate Institute, Geneva.
