METHODS FOR DATA COLLECTION

Article Selection
- For screening, we wanted to have a collection of articles in which the same animals were studied and a variable, but manageable, number of procedures were performed. 
- After testing several topics, we focused on studies of addictive or illegal substances using rhesus macaques.  
- Additional limits and exclusions were applied to ensure articles were research articles, written in English, published since 2006, and had abstracts and Mesh terms assigned. 
- The final search (below) was run in PubMed on 3/06/2017 and resulted in 484 citations.

- DistillerSR, Evidence Partners, Ottawa, Canada: https://www.evidencepartners.com/ 

Data Collection/Extractions (Articles were screened from April 2017 - September 2017) 
- A codebook and screening form (noted below) were created to maintain consistency/inter-review reliability of data captured across team members.
- The full text of all 484 citations were uploaded into DistillerSR.
- Distiller’s random order feature was enabled so that screening was randomized 
- Articles were excluded for the following reasons: 
	Drugs from the search were not administered to animals
	It was not conducting experimental procedures on animals
	The methods refer to other sources for a majority of the procedures  
	The PDF was faulty 
	They did not using non-human primates 
	They used NHP, but not rhesus 
	They used an additional animal besides NHP  
- Once through initial screening process, each article was reviewed by two team members and conflicts were resolved resulting in one set of data per article

INCLUDED FILES 

ScreeningForm.pdf
- Includes 16 questions
- Was completed by team members using DistillerSR software
- Question 1 was used as a double check.  All articles went through an initial screening for inclusion.
- Responses for questions 1, 14-16 are not included in the two datasets provided.   

Codebook.pdf
- Created to maintain consistency/inter-review reliability of data captured across team members.
- Provides definitions, details for why a selection on the screening form might be made, and MeSH. 

PosterDatasetFinal.csv
- n = 64
- Each row = one citation, the PubMed ID (PMID) is provided 
- Blank cells = no selection made 
- For column descriptions please see ScreeningForm.pdf and Codebook.pdf
- Results for this dataset available at link provided in the figshare references (http://hdl.handle.net/2193/RX913P95W) which points to a poster entitled: Searching for Animal Research Methodology: The Potential Impact of Differences between the PubMed Record and Full-text Methods Section.
	Poster was presented at the Medical Library Association in 2017.
	Poster also provides some insights about how these finding might affect a literature search on the topic.
