Description and list of files
This supplement contains the "raw" data from each field plot.
Data are available in four formats: comma delimited (cvs), Lotus (wk1 & fmt), Excel (xls), and ascii (txt).

Note: not all constituents were analyzed on every sample at every site, and the order of the columns may differ between sites.
Y and X: These are the coordinates (in cm) of each sample (n=l09) in the 8 x l2 m plot at each site.
Veg: This indicates whether the sample was found under vegetation (2) or bare soil (0).
NH4-N: Nitrogen content in the form of ammonium in ug/g soil, as extracted using KCl.
Na, Ca, K, Mg, Sr. Rb, Li: Concentrations of these cations (ug/g soil) extracted using an ammonium acetate solution. There are no data for Li for samples taken in Colorado and only limited data for Li in the Grassland # 2 at the Jornada. These values have been corrected for any contamination found in blank samples (i.e., distilled water filtered as for the sample).
Cl, Cl-blk: Chloride concentration (ug/g soil) extracted using distilled water and corrected for any contamination from a blank (i.e., distilled water filtered as for the sample). Cl are uncorrected values; Cl-Blk are corrected values. If no corrected values are given, then the correction has already been made.
NO3, NO3-N: Nitrate concentration (ug/g) and the nitrogen contained in nitrate (ug/g), in a distilled water extract of each sample. NO3 x 0.2258 = NO3-N.
F, Br, PO4, SO4: Floride, Bromide, Phosphate and Sulfate concentrations (ug/g) in a distilled water extract of each sample. F concentrations are suspect, as noted in the paper, and it was not determined on all samples. Br concentrations are uniformly low-- near the level of analytical sensitivity. Note that sulfate is expressed as SO4. It has not been converted to SO4-S. For Mojave-Coxcomb a separate column of data (Bicarb-P) is given for the bicarbonate-extractable phosphorus content of these soils.
Available N: The sum of NH4-N and NO3-N
