The role of digital technologies in the development of intercultural competences in higher education: A systematic literature mapping (2005-2024)
This project presents a systematic mapping of literature on integrating digital technologies in teaching intercultural competencies in higher education, following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. In a globalised educational context, these competences are essential for students to interact effectively in multicultural environments, while digital tools revolutionise traditional pedagogical approaches.
We analyzed scientific production between 2005 and 2024, extracted from databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO. Twenty-three open-access, peer-reviewed studies in English/Spanish were included, after filtering 176 initial records.
Digital technologies demonstrate great potential for fostering intercultural competences, but their implementation requires overcoming structural, pedagogical and equity gaps. This study provides a basis for future policy and research towards inclusive and sustainable intercultural education.
