Eric Ash was for many decades a leading figure in UK science and academia. He was a major personal contributor to the field of physical electronics, with particularly important contributions to ultrasonic surface wave devices, acoustic imaging, and super-resolution microscopy, and these contributions have continued to impact science and technology throughout the world. Eric was highly influential in university administration in the UK, modernising approaches to finances and to intellectual property, and strengthening links between medical research and science and engineering. He was a highly respected advisor to government and industry, a major contributor to a range of learned societies, and pivotal in the careers of very many researchers.
