Sphakia Survey: Environmental Zones

We divided Sphakia into eight different environmental zones, in order to help us structure our archaeological sampling, as shown in the image below. These zones are based on altitude, geology, and vegetation. People in Sphakia have used different zones in different ways in different periods.

• Zone A: Coasts and Coastal Plains
• Zone B: Lower Slopes
• Zone C: Basins and Mountain Plains
• Zone D: Gorges
• Zone E: Middle Slopes
• Zone F: Upper Slopes
• Zone G: Mountain Desert
• Zone H: Madhares

All regions include more than one environmental zone, as seen in the table below.
