In the scientific and engineering computing communities, software undeniably plays a critical role. Given that the lifespan of software vastly exceeds that of computer architectures and often that of the developers, it is important to consider not just its performance, but its quality, availability, and the processes through which it is created and maintained. This minisymposium brings together several researchers that consider these aspects of software from different points of view and apply innovative approaches to studying and improving the human side of software development, dissemination, and use. We hope that this mini-symposium will foster fruitful conversations and spark new ideas that would lead to a positive impact on scientific software development practices.
