Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Biological sciences)

At present, my main research interests are in the fields of evolutionary biogeography and integrative taxonomy, including the following topics: (i) evolutionary processes in large rivers and geothermal springs; (ii) taxon-specific shifts in evolutionary rates; (iii) cryptic glacial refugia in high-latitude areas; (iv) climate changes and keystone taxa of oligotrophic rivers; and (v) origin of faunas on remote oceanic islands. The objects are arthropods, freshwater molluscs, leeches, and fishes. I also look for some unusual geological processes driven by animals such as bioerosion of siliceous and carbonate rocks in tropical freshwater environments. Finally, I'm always on the hunt for invertebrate taxa new to science and for extremely rare insect species such as Menetries' Tiger Moth (Arctia menetriesii, Lepidoptera).
