Dr. (Mrs.) Christie Bola Elegbede is a distinguished counselling psychologist, academic, and administrator whose career has been devoted to advancing the field of guidance and counselling education in Nigeria. She hails from Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State and has become a respected voice in education, counselling psychology, and psychosocial intervention research.
Dr. Elegbede obtained her Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) from Osun State College of Education, Ilesha, before earning a B.A. (Ed) in Social Studies Education and M.Ed. in Guidance and Counselling from Lagos State University, Ojo. She completed her doctoral degree in Counselling Psychology at the University of Ibadan, where her research focused on psycho-sociological variables as correlates of counsellor efficacy and effectiveness among school counsellors in Lagos State. Her educational background laid a strong foundation for her passion for research, pedagogy, and professional counselling practice.
Her academic career began with her appointment as an Assistant Lecturer, after which she steadily rose through the ranks to become Associate Professor of Guidance and Counselling Education at the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED). Her teaching and supervision span core areas such as educational psychology, clinical psychology, rehabilitation counselling, and counselling special education. She is widely recognized for her innovative approach to practicum supervision and commitment to nurturing competent, ethical, and effective counsellors for Nigeria’s education system.
Dr. Elegbede is also an accomplished administrator and served as Head of the Department of Guidance and Counselling and currently serve as Director of the Career Services Centre (TETFUND) at LASUED. She has previously served as Director of the Directorate of Guidance and Counselling at the legacy AdeniranOgunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Acting Director of the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme, Chairman of the Centre for Sexual Harassment and Gender-Based Violence, and member of various high-level committees on accreditation, promotion appraisal, student discipline, and institutional development. These roles reflect her dedication to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive educational environment.
Her scholarly contributions are extensive, including several authored books, co-authored chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles, and conference papers presented both locally and internationally. Her research interests address counselling strategies for children with special education needs, emotional intelligence and counsellor efficacy, adolescent behavioural adjustment, prevention of sexual harassment in higher education, technology and family dynamics, and psychosocial correlates of deviant behaviour among students. She is presently conducting research on cultism, substance misuse, and violence as predictors of behaviour among undergraduates in Lagos State tertiary institutions.
Dr. Elegbede is a member of several professional bodies, including the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON), Association of Professional Counsellors in Nigeria (APROCON), American Psychological Association (APA), and the International Professional Development Association (IPDA). She is a frequent participant and paper presenter at academic and professional conferences, contributing to discussions on educational reform, counselling strategies, and student well-being.
Outside academia, Dr. Elegbede is actively involved in community service and ministry. She is the Senior Pastor of Altar of Deliverance Ministries in Badagry, Lagos, and a mentor to young professionals and students. She has facilitated numerous seminars on parenting, marital stability, and psychosocial well-being.She enjoys reading, travelling, and light jogging in her leisure time.She is happily married, and blessed with children.
