Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland

Dr Catherine Mooney is a Research Fellow in Prof David Henshall's epilepsy research group, specialising in bioinformatics and computational biology. She completed her PhD in Computer Science at UCD in 2009, followed by a four year post-doctoral position in clinical bioinformatics with Prof Denis Shields in the School of Medicine and Medical Science, UCD. Dr Mooney is a recipient of the new Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Advance Award, which supports female researchers with substantial industrial relevance to their research. Her research will see further collaboration with Professor Geraldine Boylan's team in the SFI funded research centre INFANT, working on neonatal seizures. The two year project will focus on identifying biomarkers in blood from babies at risk of seizures and ultimately aims to apply these discoveries towards point-of-care and lab-on-a-chip diagnostics.
