This work looks at ways of making lasers work better for fibre optic communication systems - the backbone of the internet. It presents ways to improve how lasers are used in optical communication systems, both at the transmitter, and at the receiver side. This work focuses on using a novel combination of exisiting technologies in the context of fibre optic communications, and provides ways to make inexpensive, low-precision lasers compatible with high precision optical communications equipment.
