The Inaliti Huis, which means ‘Needle House’ translating from isiZulu/Xhosa and Afrikaans is a sharps bin, which is designed to be placed in public areas in South Africa. This concept is based on the idea of ‘Safe Houses’ which are safe drug injection sites. Needle and syringe programmes provide drug users with sterile equipment but with less opportunity to safely dispose of sharps. Therefore these sharp bins are aimed at providing hygienic and safe zones to dispose of sharps to all-drug users/other members of the public. It is essential to deliver a secure and reliable means of discarding of sharps to ensure that needles do not get re-used and re-purposed, thereby reducing spread of infection and disease.

The Inaliti Huis, will be of two sizes, one for indoor public areas and one for outdoor spaces. Both bins will be accessible and serviceable for maintenance, sharps bag removal and replacement from a 2-point locking system. The AutoSep is a waste disposal and management system for the used sharps and is done in 2 stages, the initial process of autoclaving – which is sterilization process that utilises steam at high pressures. And the second stage of separating the waste into different sized components using a vibratory separator.

There will be deep analysis on the methodology, testing procedures, thought process and design patterns used to create the Inaliti Huis and the AutoSep. Strength of material calculations, finite element analysis, simulations and operations will be discussed and interpreted for the sharps bin and the waste disposal method.

A detailed exanimation and explanation on the design procedures implemented for both designs, the build process, costing, modifications and alterations will be discussed along with future recommendations and concluding remarks encompasses this report.
