Te Whanganui-a-Orotū/Ahuriri Estuary is recognised as a nationally significant wildlife and fisheries habitat and is a taonga to Mana Ahuriri whose hapū have lived along its shores for generations. Its central location (urban, rural and industrial catchment) and importance to iwi/hapū and community made it a prime candidate for the case study. Its extensive use and recent history of extreme weather events made it an opportunity to test if the management tools developed by Sustainable Seas could be used to restore the wellbeing of an estuary.
