The Kakanui Estuary, river and surrounding coastal area are popular destinations for recreation such as watercraft, fishing, swimming, surfing and birdwatching. The community and Te Rūnanga o Moeraki have raised concerns about recent degradation in their predominately rural catchment and the desire to mitigate nutrient overload. This case study was an opportunity to test the management tools developed by Sustainable Seas on an estuary with little data availability.
