This presentation, created for UCT Open Data Day 2019, focuses on the developing field of persistent identifiers (PIDs) in support of Open Science. Alongside the mainstream adoption of identifiers for research objects, in the form of handles and Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs), various other forms of identifiers are also becoming widely used. Examples include identifiers for humans (ORCiD, ResearcherID), for projects (RAiD, OSF), for institutions (GRID, ROR), for Q-items, P-properties and Q-values (linked open data, Wikidata), for instruments, for samples and for Grants, etc. This presentation explores the developing field of persistent, unique identification, and provides further references for those interested in pursuing the topic more deeply.
