New business models for open research

Responding to the need for open access to data, a variety of new models for sustainability of repositories have arisen, in response to different contexts. What lessons have been taken onboard in response to repositories with unsuccessful business models, and how is the academic community responding to new government mandates for better persistence and availability of publicly funded data?
