Computing is a third pillar of science, revolutionizing how scientists learn, experiment and theorize. Advances in computational science and engineering (CSE) require the combined contributions of applied mathematicians, computer scientists, domain scientists, research software engineers, and more. The SIAM-CSE conference series provides a nexus for sharing CSE research advances and building connections across disciplines. This presentation will reflect on CSE needs that led to launching the Building Engagement program during the SIAM CSE15 conference; we will discuss the ongoing critical role of the BE program as the CSE community works to address next-generation challenges and opportunities in modeling, simulation, analysis, and learning.
