The Minotaur, long enshrined in Greek myth as a monstrous hybrid creature dwelling within a labyrinth, may find its origins not in biological anomaly or an architectural maze, but in a psychospiritual vision experienced during a Minoan ritual. This paper explores the possibility that the Minotaur figure emerged from altered states of consciousness induced by wine, opium, and hallucinogenic herbs consumed during ecstatic ceremonies at Knossos. By reevaluating archaeological, iconographic, and mythological evidence, the paper proposes that the labyrinth was not merely a physical structure but also a symbolic and sensory landscape in which initiates encountered visionary experiences, including anthropomorphic bulls, in the dark recesses of the palace. This study reframes the Minotaur not as myth but as an embodied internal encounter with a sacred animal archetype, shaped by environment, substance use, and the cultural centrality of bull symbolism in Minoan Crete.
