Scoping review protocol
Objective: To explore the scope of evidence, in relation to the assessment and management of impaired vision in older adults presenting to the acute hospital setting follow a fall.
Introduction: Impaired vision is one of many contributing risk factors for falls. The assessment and management of impaired vision in the acute hospital setting, has been included in national and international falls prevention guidance. We have commenced a programme of work to implement guidance more consistently in practice. In order to inform this process, and ensure we’re working with the most up-to-date research, we set out to conduct a scoping review. The review will identify key concepts, methods, emerging topics, gaps in the evidence and inform the development of future interventions.
Inclusion criteria: This scoping review will include sources with older adults (mean/ median age ≥65 years of age), who present to the acute hospital setting following a fall. Sources must include a description of the assessment of impaired vision in this setting.
Methods: JBI methodology will be used to conduct this scoping review. A search strategy will be inputted into MEDLINE, AMED, EMBASE, PsychInfo, CINAHL and WebofScience. All citations will be uploaded and managed in Rayyan©. Title, abstract and full-text screening will be completed by two or more independent reviewers. Search results will be reported in a PRISMA flow diagram. Data extraction will be completed by two or more independent reviewers. Data analysis will include descriptive statistics of study characteristics and a qualitative content analysis. Results will be reported using the PRISMA-ScR checklist.
