Radiation-induced vaginal stenosis (VS) is a common complication of pelvic radiotherapy, affecting up to 88% of female patients. This condition severely impacts quality of life, and although vaginal dilator therapy (VDT) is the standard treatment, adherence rates remain low due to discomfort, lack of support, and poor motivation. To address these challenges, Delilate developed a smart, inflatable dilator designed to improve adherence by reducing discomfort and providing better feedback to patients.

This study assessed the commercial viability of the smart dilator using predictive, data-driven financial modeling. Two product lines—a clinical dilator ($500/unit) and a handheld dilator ($200/unit)—were analyzed. Sales forecasts, gross margin, return on investment (ROI), and net present value (NPV) were projected over a 10-year horizon. Conservative early sales volumes (100–200 units) were modeled to ensure realistic validation of product benefits.

The financial analysis revealed strong profitability potential. Gross margins of 74.7% (clinical) and 65.6% (handheld) suggest sustainable revenue generation. Net profit projections indicated exponential growth, with an estimated $2.9 million in profit by Year 10. The calculated NPV of +$920,216 confirmed the product’s financial robustness and attractiveness for investors.

These results suggest that the smart dilator is both clinically relevant and commercially viable. Beyond addressing VS, future directions include adapting the device for broader gynecological applications and integrating advanced analytics to better understand patient needs and market dynamics. Overall, the product demonstrates promise as a patient-centered innovation with strong business potential.
