To help healthcare systems prepare for an ageing population, and enable earlier diagnosis and treatment, in 2023 over 300 scientists and clinicians formed the International Consortium to Classify Ageing-Related Pathologies (ICCARP).

Starting the ICCARP, it became evident that terms related to ageing were understood differently in different fields. To address this, standard definitions were created. These standard definitions are summarised in this graphic.
