The Filipino diaspora faces unique emotional, psychological, and cultural challenges, including migratory grief and intergenerational trauma. Migratory grief stems from cultural disconnection, sacrifice, and separation, impacting familial relationships and fostering identity struggles in second-generation migrants. Unprocessed grief and mental health stigma perpetuate cycles of emotional pain and intergenerational trauma. Addressing these issues through culturally sensitive interventions—such as storytelling, cultural events, and open dialogues—can promote resilience, healing, and stronger connections within Filipino families across generations. Filipino-American clinicians must consider their risk of countertransference in this work, and seek necessary support.
