For much of Southeast Asia, Western styled composition is a relatively new phenomenon. This masks the fact that for several centuries in many parts of the region, there has been a European presence and the use of forced musical labor for slave ensembles in colonies and trade ports.

With eleven countries and several dozens of regions, nearly 700,000,000 residents, and around 1200 spoken languages and dialects, Southeast Asia’s classical music history is similarly diverse.

This resource is an attempt to bridge the gap between the relative lack of understanding of Western classical music history in Southeast Asia by focusing on one of the quintessential Western instruments, the piano, and repertoire written for it by composers who have ties to this part of the world.

While many hybridized forms of music have developed in the region since the late sixteenth century I have yet to add piano specific hybridized genres like Burmese sandaya. As with many of my other bibliographies, catalogues, and works lists this is an ongoing project and will be updated. Always check the DOI URL for latest versions.
