This two-part essay will firstly explore the adversities that offenders might face following their release or parole. Concepts of sociological stigma, marginalisation and Post Incarceration Syndrome (PICS) will be expanded upon to showcase the post-release adversities experienced by ex-offenders. The second part will analyse two strategies, one national within the United Kingdom and one international, that are being applied and aim at lowering reoffending rates. The first strategy was published by the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) in an effort to offer novel and holistic approaches to reduce reoffending which include counselling, raising offenders’ self-esteem and provide support for any addiction problems. Finally, the essay will suggest the international initiative of financial literacy that is being trialled in the USA as another way to lower recidivism.
