Multidisciplinary team: Application and funding for genomics

The multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach has been found to be effective in genomic practice to improve patient care. However, there are challenges in the implementation, including its sustainability, access, and funding. Our Models of Care workstream 3 project aims to understand the current funding landscape of genomic medicine in Victoria. This includes gaining better understanding of MDT practices within genomic medicine and their financial sustainability. Here, we identify some current MDT practices that have been established and rolled out in Australia, followed by a discussion of the current Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items for MDT and potential lessons for funding genomics MDTs. Lastly, MDT applications in other countries with public funding is explored.
