Genes encoding for bitter taste receptors are primarily found on chromosome 7 and 12, clustered together in a TAS2R gene family. The bitter sensitivity depends on the alleles of the receptor gene, which vary across individuals.  The TAS2R38 gene, located on chromosome 7, was used to see the correlation of the student's smoking habit and coffee consumption and their bitter taste sensitivity.
