The corn leaf aphid (Rhopalosiphum maidis) is a common pest of corn, especially during the early whorl and tasseling stages. Both nymphs and adults suck sap from leaves, whorls, and tassels, leading to stunted growth, poor pollination, and reduced grain set. Heavy infestations may result in sticky honeydew deposits, promoting sooty mold development. The pest is often favored by warm and dry weather. Management includes promoting natural enemies like lady beetles and lacewings, maintaining good crop vigor, and applying insecticides only when aphid populations exceed economic thresholds.
