An Exploration into Health Outcomes and Trauma of Those Impacted by Gender-Based Violence A Scoping Review Protocol
Objective: The objective of this scoping review is to understand the extent and type of evidence in relation to the intersection of health outcomes and trauma amongst gender-based violence (GBV) survivors. As well, this scoping review aims to better define and conceptualize how trauma is discussed within health and GBV-related research contexts.
Introduction: GBV is a pervasive and urgent human rights concern that have deleterious health outcomes and is associated with heightened risk of trauma. There is limited empirical research that investigates the relationship and intersect of trauma due to violence and the potential health consequences that arise for GBV survivors. This scoping review aims to better grasp and conceptualize the available literature on these concepts.
Inclusion criteria: Utilizing the participants, concept, and context (PCC) framework, participants will include women at least 18-years-old, who have experienced GBV historically or presently. For the concept, included studies must discuss both health outcomes and trauma, within the context and result of experiencing violence. Lastly, studies that are peer-reviewed, qualitative or mixed-methods with a qualitative component, and published since 2010 will be included for this review.
Methods: Key information sources to be searched include the following: MEDLINE via Ovid, Scopus, CINAHL Complete (EBSCO Host), Social Work Abstracts (EBSCO Host), PTSDPubs (Proquest), and PsycINFO (Proquest). The search will be conducted in September 2024 and only include studies published in English and since 2010. In terms of the study selection process, included studies will be compared to the inclusion criteria and considered accordingly. Included studies will encompass discussion of gender-based violence, women’s health outcomes, and the inclusion of trauma. Subsequently, the extracted data will be presented in a tabulated format with an accompanying the completion of a descriptive qualitative data analysis.
Keywords: Gender-based violence; women’s health; trauma; health outcomes; health inequities.
