Unbiased Sample Collection

Considering the highly algorithm-driven and tailored For-You Page (FYP) of TikTok, a unique account was created to create a more impartial sample of videos. On October 6, 2024, at 19:30 (CST), the research account searched #Prabowogemoy on the TikTok Search Bar. The goal was to collect as many videos until the end of the presented FYP without reloading. Additionally, this research only selected those videos that fall within the Indonesian campaign window of November 28, 2023 to February 10, 2024. Sanctioned by the Indonesian government, political candidates can only start campaigning on November 28, 2023 (Chyntia, 2023). During the campaign window, candidates are allowed to circulate and disseminate any form of political communication/advertising in any form of media. The campaign enters its ‘silent period’ on February 10, 2024, when all candidates are prohibited from campaigning in any public forum until the election day on February 14, 2024. If these videos meet the aforementioned criteria, we include it in the sample by accounting for the link, downloading or screen recording them, and labeling them. The sample size came down to 45 videos, ranging from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. The videos collected are often referred to as “edits” due to their compilation of clips, fast cuts and hyper-filtered and transitioned components.
