How we did it: Innovative student-led academic medicine rotation
There is a growing need to ensure adequate PA educator workforce, but limited preceptor availability and recruitment and retention of qualified faculty remain a challenge. And although many PA students express interest in future roles in education, most receive no formal training on how to teach.
In this session* we will describe how we implemented a student-led academic medicine elective rotation to help the student develop core teaching competencies and discuss how we integrated innovative educational strategies such as active learning, competency-based andragogy, and lecture-free didactic learning in curricular design.
Therefore, the value of this presentation to the educational community is multifold: we present a unique model for a collaborative student-faculty partnership and “building the pipeline” of future educators, and illustrate how several innovative educational methods, which are often discussed but variably defined and inconsistently applied, have been adapted and implemented by the presenters.
