The pig is rewarded for touching the target (a small ball on a target stick) with its nose and thereby learns to approach the target. In some of the target training trials, approaching the target requires pigs to step onto the mat. Using the same procedure in the test, the pig positioned itself on the mat in front of the apparatus before each trial.
