Brosche et al. (2025) Video S1
An overview of the test conditions of the body-as-an-obstacle task in pigs. One trial per condition, from when the experimenter lifts up the cover to when the pig succeeds or the cover is closed, is shown. In the attached condition, the mat the pig is standing on is attached to the sliding panel, and, consequently, the panel-pushing task can only be solved if the pig steps off the mat and pushed from the other side. In the unattached condition, the mat is not attached to the sliding panel and, consequently, the panel-pushing task can be solved from the mat side. In the known unsolvable condition, the mat is not attached to the sliding panel, but two visible external obstacles block the panel from behind. Consequently, the task is unsolvable from both sides. In the unknown unsolvable condition, the mat is not attached to the sliding panel, but an inconspicuous external obstacle blocks the panel from behind. Consequently, the task is unsolvable from both sides. In the foot discomfort condition, the experimenter pulls at the chain attached to the mat the pig stands on to mimic the sensation perceived by the pig in the attached condition. In the foot discomfort control condition, the experimenter pulls at the chain, as she does in the foot discomfort condition, but the chain is not attached to the mat the pig stands on.
