The African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI) seminar featuring Peter Willis and Gareth Morgan, co-authors of the new book Becoming Good at Crises: A Field Guide for Leaders.

Drawing on their extensive experience and reflections from two of the most significant recent crises - Cape Town’s 2016–2018 drought and the COVID-19 pandemic - Peter and Gareth argue that navigating ongoing disruption is not just inevitable but a leadership imperative. Their book challenges leaders in the public and private sectors to embrace uncertainty and actively build their capacity to lead effectively through it.

Through conversation with Gina Ziervogel, the session explores key themes from the book, including the idea that leadership during crisis is a personal and organisational practice that can be developed. It also reflects on how lessons from Cape Town’s water crisis, gathered through interviews with city officials and others at the heart of the response, can offer guidance for future governance in the face of compounding risks.
