This article explores the theoretical framework of new materialism and its application to contemporary art practices, focusing on the dynamic relationship between matter and meaning. Drawing from the works of key theorists such as Karen Barad, Gilles Deleuze, and Rosi Braidotti, it examines how new materialism challenges traditional dichotomies like human/non-human and discourse/matter by emphasizing the intra-active entanglements of entities. The paper analyzes the artistic practices of Ana Mendieta, Carolee Schneemann, and Marina Abramović to illustrate how their works embody the principles of intra-action and becoming, revealing the interconnectedness of bodies, materials, and environments. By redefining the concept of agency and exploring the relational dynamics in art, the article contributes to a deeper understanding of how material-semiotic practices shape and are shaped by their contexts, offering insights into the ongoing process of becoming in artistic expression.
