The date palm is one of the oldest and economically important cultivated fruit trees in Iraq. In view of the development of DNA-based techniques, this review was conducted to demonstrate the importance of applying the Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR), which is considered one of the useful molecular techniques in evaluating genetic relationships and genetic diversity between different in date palm cultivars and has a strong ability to distinguish Among the cultivars, it gives high levels of DNA polymorphism, as it is one of the fast and highly credible technologies, and it gave distinguished results in the study of genetic diversity, estimation of genetic proximity and distance between date palm cultivars, and identification of new cultivars and seed strains. ISSR was also effectively employed in order to distinguish between the DNA of the sex and gave reliable results to determine the sex of the date palm, and the results obtained showed that it is an effective tool for detecting molecular polymorphisms in palm, which indicates the discriminatory power of ISSR technique.
