Análisis Comparativo de la cobertura de SciELO y Redalyc.org
Objective: to learn the structure of the two main open-access
databases in Latin America: Scientific Electronic Library
Online (SciELO) and Sistema de Información Científica Redalyc
(redalyc.org) from a compared perspective of the journals
indexed at both online platforms, which communicate fulltext
articles.
Methodology: a web search was carried out from February
14th to 17th, 2013, at the websites www.scielo.org and www.
redalyc.org, in views of finding out the number of journals
edited by country, field of knowledge and disciplines in both
databases.
Results: Brazil, Mexico and Colombia comprise more than
50% of the total for each online pool. At SciELO, the most
representative field of knowledge is sciences, with 47.2%
(426 journals); whereas for redalyc.org, it is social sciences,
with 59% (475 publications). The disciplines with the largest
number of journals are, for SciELO: medicine (184), health
(61) and biology (54); while for redalyc.org, they relate to education
(74), psychology (67) and medicine (59). In total both
databases share 339 journals, in which Colombia holds the
largest number of journals common to both databases (90),
and the field of social sciences concentrates the largest number
of shared publications (167 journals).
