Postsynaptic currents were elicited by activation of auto-synaptic or trans-neuronal synaptic inputs. EPSCs adapted to repeated auto-synaptic stimuli, but a robust response reoccurred following the deviant trans-neuronal synaptic stimulus (A, upper panel). When the order of stimuli was reversed (A, lower panel), EPSCs adapted to repeated trans-neuronal synaptic stimuli, but a robust response reoccurred following the deviant auto-synaptic stimulus. This SSA profile was also found for IPSCs recorded from two inhibitory neurons (B).
