Research Statement
Wig contributes current international conversation occurring within contemporary photographic practice that is questioning the social and political role the photograph plays in contemporary discourse. Coming out of my central research questions , “what is the photographic?” “what can a photograph be”? Wig propositions a position of doubt as a methodological approach to engaging with image creation and reception.
Wig is a photographic work the has undergone rudimentary photoshop processes creating an image that is uncertain of itself. Operating off the historical linage of Jeff Wall photographic oeuvre and Dutch still life painting traditions Wig exposes the structure of these linages to question the process of symbolic representation as a form of world building.
Wig was exhibited as part of 30 Days of Culture Shock a curated group exhibition held at apexart, New York featuring 56 artists. The invitation for this show built on previous research conducted in New York at apexart in 2012 where I was an Inbound Research Fellow. apexart is a centre for experimental art in New York with focus on international connection. The exhibition itself was accompanied by an online panel discussion of international artists and curators.
