Research Statement
In 2024, Red Stitch’s acclaimed 2023 production of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” transferred from their intimate 80-seat venue in St Kilda to the expansive 1,000-seat Comedy Theatre in Melbourne. Award-winning Australian director Sarah Goodes sought my expertise to guide the actors in maintaining the subtleties and nuances of their vocal performances while adapting sustainably and energetically to the larger space.
As voice coach, I focused on helping the cast, including Kat Stewart, David Whiteley, Emily Goddard, and Harvey Zielinsky, use their voices effectively without sacrificing the intimacy and emotional depth of their original performances. This delicate balance was essential in preserving the production's integrity while ensuring it reached every audience member in the larger venue.
The successful adaptation of the performance style contributed significantly to the production's critical acclaim and commercial success. Reviewers praised the cast's ability to convey the play's intense emotions and complex relationships, even in the larger theatre space. The voice work was instrumental in achieving this seamless transition, allowing the production to maintain its powerful impact on audiences. The triumph of this production at the Comedy Theatre has led to its upcoming tour to the Sydney Theatre Company in 2025, further cementing its status as a remarkable achievement in Australian theatre.
