Nartsissov, Marta CascanteOutside Na+ (Nao) binds to the free transporter in the ‘outer’ configuration (T), accessible for binding outside ions. This binding facilitates the binding of glutamate (Gluo) and then Na⁺ atoms again. The model assumes fast equilibrium in these steps. The transporter changes configuration (T’), facilitating dissociation of all bound Na+ ions and glutamate inside cells. K⁺ binding facilitates a switch of the transporter to the outer structure and dissociation of bound K⁺ outside.
