Using a bicycle as a metaphor, this image illustrates how the processes of science and engineering are often intertwined. The front wheel, the steering part of the bike, depicts the process of science while the back wheel, the power, depicts the process of engineering design. The frame of the bicycle holds the foundations of the habits of mind that scientists and engineers think. The real world needs involves both science and engineering. Scientists need instruments to measure the world. Instruments and sensors are needed to collect data - that takes engineering to design and build them. The discoveries of science drive engineering and visa versa. Teaching one without the other is learning just half the story. What will we dream up next? Science & engineering might be involved!
