Maize Moving

figure
posted on 2020-08-10, 19:19 authored by Jeffrey Ross-IbarraJeffrey Ross-Ibarra, Dolores Piperno
Map showing hypothesized movement of maize across the Americas based on present evidence and highlighting earliest archaeological sites in different regions. Arrows show archaeological and palaeoecological sites representing possible source and destination populations, but are not meant to imply specific dispersal routes, geographic locales, or chronologies. For example, although migration from the Mexican highlands appears to have played a role in maize adaptation to the Andes, the arrow should not be taken to suggest the maize specifically came from Oaxaca or that dispersal may have occurred via nautical routes and by 6500 BP.
