Mahler took nearly seven years to write this Symphony No. 2. He began writing it in 1888 and completed the magisterial work in 1894 at the age of thirty-four. As a composer and conductor of the Austro-Germanic tradition, Mahler’s compositional output has long been perceived as signifying the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, as romanticism gave way to modernism. The immense second symphony, comprising five movements and taking an hour and a half to perform, has become one of Mahler’s most beloved works. (Lucy Li)
