This figure shows the position of the central complex in the Drosophila brain. For further information see the figure legend.

The position of the central complex neuropil in the coronal plane

A, projection showing the position of the FB (arrowhead) and EB (asterisk*) in the
protocerebrum is revealed by enhancer trap line c255;Uas-mCD8::GFP. There is also
expression in the optic lobes and other regions in the central brain. Arrow denotes ventral
direction. Scale bar 50μm.

B, projection showing roughly 8 layers of the FB revealed by nc82 staining.

C, section of the PB revealed using line c465 ;UAS-mCD8::GFP. One PB
segment is indicated by the bracket.

D, projection showing the two rings of the EB, one
anterior (a) and one posterior (p) revealed by nc82 staining.

E, section showing three
layers (I, II, III) of the NO shown by c465; UAS-nSyb::GFP.

F, projection of the FB
revealing a separation into dorsal (nc82 layers 6-8), central (nc82 layers 3-5) and ventral
(nc82 layers 6-8) layered sections (brackets) that roughly correspond to the layered nc82
boundaries between 2/3 and 5/6 shown in B. Two layers are further highlighted by
enhancer trap line 104y;UAS-mCD8::GFP (green).

G, schematic of the CX in the coronal
plane indicating the positions of the VBOs and LTRs. Arrows relate the position of the CX to directions on the body axis; a, anterior; p, posterior; m, medial; l, lateral; d, dorsal;
v, ventral. Green, α-GFP; magenta, nc82. All scale bars 25μm unless otherwise stated.
