La jeunesse à Mayotte
This presentation explores the complex socio-political and cultural landscape faced by the youth in Mayotte, a French overseas department marked by rapid demographic growth, structural underdevelopment, and intense migratory pressure. Drawing on recent ethnographic and sociological research, we analyze how youth in Mayotte are situated at the crossroads of marginalization and integration. The presentation highlights the precarious living conditions, legal uncertainty, and educational disengagement that contribute to a climate of vulnerability, while also examining the rise in juvenile delinquency as both a symptom and a consequence of systemic neglect.
Yet, beyond this apparent fragility, we underscore the enduring role of traditional solidarities—such as the shungu —in providing frameworks of belonging, socialization, and resilience. By adopting an anthropological approach, we aim to move beyond technocratic solutions and reveal the internal logics of Mahoran society that may serve as levers for inclusive public policy. Ultimately, investing in Mahoran youth means not only addressing urgent social issues but also recognizing their potential as agents of cohesion and transformation in a contested geopolitical space. The presentation combines a written presentation (.pdf) and an oral recording (.mp4) explaining the challenges that the youth faces in Mayotte.
