Subtle yet persistent misspellings continue to disrupt information and knowledge societies, despite meticulous proofreading and collation efforts. The underlying mechanisms of human spelling failures remain poorly understood. Here we present a comprehensive framework for analyzing the spatiotemporal evolution of correct and incorrect spellings, encompassing the full spectrum of scientific terms, brands, and common words from their inception. Our framework introduces novel metrics, a spelling behavioral simulation (SBS) model and the Physarum algorithm to elucidate the spatiotemporal dynamics of collective spelling behaviors. Our analysis unveils a dual mechanism: (i) cumulative occurrence rate of collective spelling failures may approach zero but never reaching it; (ii) collective spelling behaviors spatially assemble into biomimetic geometries, punctuated by spontaneous individual misspellings. This paradigmatic coalition highlights the uncharted interplay between linguistic, cognitive, and sociocultural mechanisms that influence collective spelling failures. Our multidisciplinary findings inform immediate benefits gleaned from such human fallibilities.
