Purpose- Although it has great potential in the construction industry, the implementation of Digital Twin (DT) in the construction industry has not achieved the expected results. This paper aims to describe the factors influencing the intention to adopt DT in the construction industry from multiple dimensions and give corresponding suggestions.

Design/methodology/approach- The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Strategy-Technology-Organization-People-Environment (STOPE) framework was integrated to form a new theoretical framework. Factors influencing the intention to adopt DT were explored in terms of perceptual and objective dimensions and the relationship between the objective factors was explored.

With survey data collected from construction enterprises in China, the model was then empirically tested by partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM).

Findings- The results indicated that the intention to adopt DT is positively influenced by policy incentive and market demand. And technology cost has a negative impact on it. Perceived ease of use is positively affected by organizational readiness, data management, and conceptual change, while perceived usefulness is positively affected by comparative advantage. Moreover, policy incentive, competitive pressure and market demand have a positive effect on both comparative advantage and organizational readiness.

Originality- Most of the existing studies on DT are literature reviews, this paper conducted a quantitative analysis of the influencing factors on the basis of empirical data. This study contributes to deepened understandings of the influence mechanism of various factors on DT adoption intention, and also expands the depth of DT research in academia.
