In an increasingly interconnected world, where devastating news is widespread across digital platforms amplifying the reach of headlines every day, the frequent and inadvertent viewership of emotionally provocative headlines can adversely impact readers’ mental health. This study addresses the following questions: a) What is the emotional impact on the audience when they read episodically vs. thematically framed headlines? b) What is the recall value of headlines when framed accordingly?

A paired t-test indicated that episodically framed headlines provoke significantly more intense emotions than their thematic counterparts. Qualitative analysis of recall value was higher for headlines that the participants rated as having higher emotional intensity (episodic).
