Riding Together: A Scoping Review of Factors Influencing User Behaviour in Bike-Sharing Systems
This dataset was compiled as part of a scoping review examining the factors influencing user behaviour in Bike-Sharing Systems (BSS). A systematic search was conducted across multiple databases (e.g., Scopus, Web of Science) to identify peer-reviewed studies published between 2014 and 2025. The review followed the five-stage framework proposed by Arksey and O’Malley (2005) and refined by Levac et al. (2010), adhering to PRISMA-ScR guidelines to ensure transparency and rigour in the selection, screening, and reporting processes.
In total, 52 studies were included based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data extraction was conducted manually and involved categorising each study according to the factors investigated, methodology used, geographical focus, and key findings. Factors were organised into four main categories: user-related, BSS provider-related, government-related, and urban environment-related.
No ethical approval was required, as all data were sourced from publicly available peer-reviewed publications. However, every effort was made to accurately document and synthesise findings to ensure reproducibility and transparency. This dataset includes a list of all identified factors and their association with either the actual use or the intention to use BSS, organised across the four main categories
