The data was collected using respirometry experiments conducted in captivity at Mote Marine Laboratory, Sarasota, FL, USA and semi-captivity at Bimini Biological Field Station, South Bimini, BHS (details in manuscript). Throughout trials, oxygen saturation (mg L-1) and temperature (deg C) were recorded by a multiparameter meter and body acceleration (g) was recorded by a Cefas G6a+ acceleration data logger. Mass of animals was weighed before and after trials, and the mean mass is included in the data set.

Prior to analysis, acceleration data was corrected for sensor noise by subtracting the mean acceleration value during periods when the shark was observed motionless within the respirometer (0.01827 g).

Using this data, VO2 (mg O2 hr-1) were estimated and temperature corrected to 29.5 deg C, using equations and Q10 values stated within the manuscript.

Note: Background respiration levels and R2 for oxygen degradation curves are missing for trials conducted at Mote Marine Laboratory. Estimated VO2 (mg O2 hr-1) were supplied by Lear et al. JEB (2017) for use in this study.
